A high uric acid result can immediately lead to one question: “What am I allowed to eat now?” While dietary choices can influence uric acid levels, managing the condition is not simply about creating a long list of foods to avoid.
Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down substances called purines. When uric acid levels become elevated, some people may develop gout, a type of crystal arthritis that can cause sudden episodes of painful, swollen joints. However, having a high uric acid level does not necessarily mean that a person has gout.
Dietary habits can be one part of managing uric acid. Choosing a balanced eating pattern, staying adequately hydrated, maintaining a healthy body weight, and being mindful of foods and beverages that can contribute to higher uric acid levels may be helpful for appropriate individuals.
At the same time, extreme food restrictions are not always necessary or appropriate. High uric acid and gout require an individualised approach, particularly when someone has recurrent attacks, persistent joint symptoms, or other health conditions.
Medical evaluation is important when joint pain or swelling repeatedly occurs, especially when symptoms are sudden or severe. A rheumatologist can determine whether symptoms are related to gout or another rheumatological condition and advise on appropriate management.
In this Doc Talk, Dr. Israrul Haque, Consultant Rheumatologist and Clinical Immunologist, discusses dietary considerations after a high uric acid result and helps viewers understand how food choices fit into overall gout and uric acid management.
If you have been told that your uric acid is high, avoid making major dietary changes based solely on the laboratory report. Discuss your individual situation with a qualified healthcare professional.
