I wrote this song for me. I am so very hard on myself. I pick apart almost everything I do and say. How I look, how I move, the words I choose, the things I wish I'd said differently. I can take a perfectly good moment and find a hundred things wrong with it. I really never give myself a break. For most of my life, I was a behind-the-scenes kind of person. I had never given a speech or really had to be in front of a camera until this year. And somehow, my very first time speaking in front of an audience was on the TED stage! It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I still can't believe I did it. And I still haven't watched it. I know myself well enough to know that I'd probably spend the entire time criticizing every little thing. Why do we do this to ourselves? Maybe if I'd started doing these things earlier in life, they would come more naturally. And getting older certainly doesn't make it any easier. But I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. So many of us are incredibly kind and understanding toward other people, yet we can be absolutely brutal to ourselves. The funny thing is, I'm really proud of what I've accomplished these past few years. My life has taken a turn I never could have imagined. If someone had told me a few years ago that I'd be doing all of these things, I would have thought they were insane! And yet, here I am, still worrying about whether I said the wrong thing or looked ridiculous doing it. I'm trying to change that. I'm trying to appreciate the things I've done instead of immediately looking for what I could have done better. It's not easy. Some days that little voice in my head is louder than others. That's really where this song came from. The realization that I would never speak to someone I love the way I sometimes speak to myself. I don't have all of this figured out. Not even close. But I'm trying to be a little kinder to myself. To let things go. To accept that I can be awkward, make mistakes, forget a word, or say something completely ridiculous, and still be okay with who I am. Maybe that's enough for now. I hope this song speaks to anyone who has ever felt this way. We could all stand to give ourselves a little more grace. ❤️ Kind To Myself (Verse 1) I say goodbye, then play it back The right words I seem to lack Was I too much, was I too strange? Why do I wish that I could change? I lose a word, I lose my place And dwell on things I can't replace I take a moment that felt right And pick it all apart that night (Pre-Chorus) Oh, I'm so tired of this voice That makes me question every choice Between the person I can't see And the one I wish that I could be (Chorus) I wanna be kind to myself The way I'm kind to everybody else Stop keeping score of every mistake Stop making my own heart something to break I wanna breathe and let things go Give myself the kindness I never seem to know Maybe I'm more than the things I see When I'm looking at myself so critically Oh, I wanna be I wanna be kind to myself (Verse 2) Too much weight, too little grace Another fault I can't erase I search for something smart to say Then wish I'd said it a different way I wonder what they think of me As if their minds were mine to read And every little thing I've done Is another reason to come undone (Pre-Chorus) Oh, I'm so tired of keeping score Of finding something wrong once more If someone I loved felt this way I'd never let them carry that each day (Chorus) I wanna be kind to myself The way I'm kind to everybody else Stop keeping score of every mistake Stop making my own heart something to break I wanna breathe and let things go Give myself the grace I never seem to know Maybe I'm more than the things I see When I'm looking at myself so critically Oh, I wanna be I wanna be kind to myself (Bridge) What if I forgot a word? What if I said something absurd? What if I wasn't who they thought they'd see Would that make me any less of me? (Final Chorus) I'm gonna be kind to myself Even when I can't see anything else Even when I stumble, even when I fall I don't have to punish myself for it all I'm gonna breathe and let things go Learn to give the grace I give to those I know Maybe I'm enough right here, right now Maybe I can learn to love me somehow Oh, I wanna be I deserve to be Lyrics written by me, Kelly Boesch.
