Tell Him All Your Sailing Plans - Traditional Maritime Pub Song & Folk Drinking Song

Sailors have always known there are certain things you simply must not do at sea. Never ask a Scottish fisherman where he's going. Never whistle aboard ship. Never sail on Friday. Never count the crew. And whatever you do, don't tempt the sea by announcing what you intend to do next. Of course, there is a perfectly sensible explanation for all of this: sailors have discovered that the surest way to make Fate laugh is to become too confident about the future. "Tell Him All Your Sailing Plans" turns these old maritime superstitions into a lively, tongue-in-cheek pub song. Each verse introduces another wonderfully unreasonable rule, while the crew answers with hearty “Yo-ho!”, “Heave-ho!” and “Hurrah!” cries. The recurring chorus twists the familiar saying, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans,” into a sailor's warning: "If you want to make God laugh, Tell Him all your sailing plans!" The song doesn't ask whether these beliefs are true. It cheerfully assumes that questioning them is probably another bad idea. The maritime folklore behind the song was inspired in part by Laura Alexandrine Smith's 1888 collection, "The Music of the Waters", which brings together sailors' songs, customs, superstitions, and water legends.
