About this video:
This is the one you kept asking for. The Technics SB-R1 review the comments have been hunting for years.
Panasonic killed the Technics brand. In 2014 they rebirthed it, walked into IFA Berlin with a no-compromise flagship speaker and said: "This is what we can do!" Presenting the R1 Reference Class system. The speaker was the Technics SB-R1 – and it is rare. Almost nobody has heard a pair. Almost nobody has lived with them. Used ones barely exist.
Viewers and Patrons have asked for this review for years. So we did not do a polite walkaround. We did the biggest thing we can do on this channel.
Lars Risbo – yes, THAT Lars Risbo (CTO of PURIFI) – has joined the Silverback Listening Team. We sat him and a our new young musician/singer/HIFI nerd Daniel McMillan down BLINDFOLDED. No brand. No price. No cabinet to fall in love with. No story to swallow. Just sound.
Then I tell you the rest from the only position that actually matters: I have lived with these speakers for six years. I sold them once. I regretted it before the buyer was out the door.
That is the scoop. A vanished statement speaker. A brand fighting for its life. A world-class speaker engineer hearing it with the eyes switched off. And a reviewer who still cannot get them out of the room.
In this Flagship series film you get the whole animal:
– The story, the Blindfolded first contact: Daniel McMillan hearing his own, newest record and discovering things he did not hear before.
– Lars Risbo explaining the distortion problem.
– Why they work as a nearfield monitor AND as a pair of 25 Hz subwoofers
– The honest limits of the SB-R1
– The used market, and what NOT to buy..
If you have ever wondered what happens when a company is allowed to build without a spreadsheet sitting on the engineer’s chest… this is that speaker. A real FLAGSHIP. But even so, it was sold at a very competitive price for what it is. Most likely Technics never made a profit on the SB-R1.
It does not get bigger than this on Stjernholm Reviews. No monetization. No manufacturer script. We listen. We protect wildlife. We try to make Hi-Fi great again.
