Enter the world of speedrunning in the late 90s, when NESticle reigned supreme as the Nintendo emulator of choice, and the most common way to record gameplay was with the NSM (NES Movie) controller input recording format. In the second episode of Zophar's Retro Rewind, we discuss the dawn of speedrunning and feature five speedrun contests ran and sponsored by Zophar’s Domain beginning in 1999 - 15 years before speedrun.com was founded - and the early beginnings of TAS files (Tool Assisted Speedruns).
Today, retrogaming is everywhere and millions of people are experiencing the classics from Sega, Nintendo, Atari and many others for the first time - but back in the ’90s, the concept of video game nostalgia was in its infancy. Whether you were there as it unfolded, or are now experiencing it for the first time, you just might learn something you didn’t know before - like getting to the final boss of The Legend of Zelda (NES) without a sword!
Enjoy this walk down memory lane and continue to leave your comments below. It helps me to shape future episodes into the content you want to see most!
