Episode two of USJ Blue Line, presented by PREM1R Motivation.
No guest this week — just Remi DeSmith and Rainey Lay in the O'Connell Center breaking down The Champion's Mind, one of the foundational books in sports psychology, and getting a lot more honest than we planned to.
We work through the first three chapters and what they actually look like in practice. The opening idea — if you can spot greatness, you've got greatness — and why talent and greatness aren't the same thing. Chapter two on the mental skills nobody tells you how to actually do: Rainey visualizes exactly where she's going to score before every practice, and Remi records affirmation scripts and plays them back before games. The book's point that visualization has to be gritty and real, not some magic floating rink in the sky. And chapter three on ego, antifragility, and where your confidence is actually coming from.
The stories are the part worth staying for. Rainey on scoring against a nationally ranked Oswego team after visualizing that exact play. Remi on being concussed for four months of his first college season, telling his coaches he was going to start anyway, and getting thrown in late in the third against Adrian College when the other goalie pulled himself. Rainey being completely candid that she's not feeling confident right now, in preseason, with a new program and no lineup yet.
We also get into what happens when you're the one not dressing, how to mentor someone through an injury without forcing your own experience on them, burnout in youth hockey, and why Crosby still carries his own bags to preseason games in the middle of nowhere.
Hockey, psychology, and the parts of competing nobody posts about. Built out of USJ, made for anyone who competes.
