The BK 117 is a twin-engined medium utility–transport helicopter. Due to the rigid main rotor system, the BK117 has relatively high stability, a four-bladed main rotor that is smaller and slower-turning compared to its other competitors of its time, reducing vibration and noise. The high-mounted tail boom and tail rotor also means several benefits, such as enhanced ground safety to personnel. This enables the helicopter to perform efficiently especially in EMS.
ADAC Luftrettung gGmbH is Europe’s largest air rescue organisation, with its own fleet of around 55 modern rescue helicopters, located at 37 different stations. These also include four stations that are active across national borders.
