A team in Dresden, Germany just tested a solid-state lithium-sulfur battery clearing over 600 Wh/kg — more than double standard lithium-ion — while removing most of the fire risk and almost all of the cobalt supply chain that comes with it.
For over a decade, lithium-ion has quietly hit a wall: energy density that stopped climbing, a flammable liquid electrolyte nobody talks about, and a raw material list running through some of the most politically unstable mining regions on Earth. Lithium-sulfur was supposed to fix the weight and cost problem — until it kept dying within a few dozen charges. Solid-state was supposed to fix the fire risk — until dendrites kept cracking the cell.

Two German research projects, AnSiLiS and TALISSMAN, redesigned the cathode architecture itself instead of trying to patch the old leak, and the result is a hybrid solid-liquid cell that survives real cycling, stays compatible with existing lithium-ion factory lines, and targets a manufacturing cost under €75/kWh — cheaper than what's in your phone right now, at more than double the energy density.
If this scales, it doesn't just mean longer phone battery life. It means electric cars with double the range at the same weight, regional electric aviation becoming viable for the first time, and a battery supply chain that no longer runs through conflict-linked cobalt and nickel mining.
