Delhi Police detained a group of lawyers near the National School of Drama (NSD) and the Supreme Court on Saturday (October 10), as the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar was being blocked across central Delhi. The protest demands the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The lawyers, who say they practise in the Supreme Court and the High Court, say they set out on foot from the Supreme Court carrying posters of the Preamble of the Constitution with the words "Fair Election". They say police stopped them near Mandi House, pushed them into buses and kept them inside for about half an hour with the windows shut and no air. One woman lawyer says police tore her poster even though only three of them were walking quietly. She calls it an illegal detention and says police did not tell them where they were being taken. After she protested loudly, police let her go but took away her colleague.
"We are officers of the court. If this is how we are treated, think of what the common people face," one of the detained lawyers says. Watch the ground report.
