We live surrounded by images. Every day, we encounter photographs, videos, AI-generated images, news, advertisements, and countless forms of visual information. But do images really show us reality as it is? 《Artist of the Year Award 2026》, jointly presented by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) and the SBS Cultural Foundation, begins with this question. This year’s four selected artists—Lee Haemin, Lee Jungwoo, Jeon Hyunsun, and Hong Jinhwon—work across painting, video, photography, sculpture, and installation. Although their artistic languages differ, they share an interest in the structures and conditions that shape the world we perceive. Lee Haemin explores existence, time, and materiality through traces, fragile landscapes, and the changing states of things. Lee Jungwoo examines how technology, generative AI, and lost historical archives reshape our understanding of memory and history. Jeon Hyunsun expands painting beyond the traditional canvas, exploring how images interact with space, objects, and the viewer’s physical experience. Hong Jinhwon investigates the power structures surrounding images through photography, moving images, and web-based technologies, questioning how images are produced, circulated, and transformed into social forces. Four different practices ultimately lead us toward one fundamental question: What kind of world are we actually looking at? And perhaps an even more important question: What are we unable to see?
