Wolves have returned to California—and they did it without trucks, crates, helicopters, or a government reintroduction program. After nearly nine decades without a confirmed wild wolf in the state, a collared male known as OR-7 crossed south from Oregon in late 2011. He eventually returned north, but his journey opened the door to something much bigger. Today, California has 11 confirmed wolf packs spread across seven counties, with at least 50 wolves officially known to be living in the state.
This video traces the remarkable expansion from one wandering wolf to a growing network of packs across Northern California—and even signs of wolf activity as far south as Tulare County. We explore how wolves moved far beyond early expectations, why California’s first modern pack disappeared, and how continued migration from Oregon allowed the population to keep expanding. Their return has become one of the most unusual large-predator recoveries in the American West, driven entirely by natural dispersal rather than human release.
But the wolves’ comeback has also created a growing conflict between wildlife recovery and livestock protection. Ranchers in wolf territory face confirmed and probable livestock losses while the animals remain protected under California’s endangered species laws, and compensation and non-lethal management programs have struggled to keep pace with the expansion. From OR-7’s thousand-mile journey to today’s pack map, this is the story of how wolves reclaimed California on their own—and why nobody knows exactly where they will appear next.
