365 Daily Devotions: Bible Character Edition 💁🏻 Who Is Gideon? Gideon – Victory Without Transformation After God gave Gideon victory over the Midianites, the people wanted to make him king (Judges 8:22). Gideon answered well at first. He said, “I will not rule over you… the Lord will rule over you” (Judges 8:23). His words were right. God alone was Israel’s true King. But Gideon’s actions did not fully match his words. He asked for gold from the people and made an ephod, a priestly garment used for worship (Judges 8:24–27). He placed it in his city, and the people began to treat it like an idol. The Bible says it became a snare to Gideon and his family. Even after a great victory, his heart was not completely transformed. Deliverance from enemies did not automatically produce full obedience to God. This shows that outward success does not equal inward renewal. Only God can truly change the heart (Ezekiel 36:26). Even believers still struggle with sin and need ongoing grace. Salvation is by God’s power alone, but sanctification—the process of growing in holiness—is also God’s work in us (Philippians 2:12–13). Gideon’s story warns us that we must not only speak correct words about God’s rule but also live under His rule daily. 📖 Bible Readings: Judges 8:22–35 Deuteronomy 6:4–5 Ezekiel 36:26 Psalm 51:10 Philippians 2:12–13 James 1:22 👨🏻‍💻 Teachings: 1. We can have a good intention and have sinful acts. 2. We can have a good beginning and have a tragic ending. 3. We can have a good foundation and have it demolished. 💪🏼 Applications: 1. Make the right decisions, for the right reasons, at the right time. 2. Pray earnestly that God’s grace will carry us to the end. 3. Build godly foundations and prepare those who will stand on them. 🎙 Discussion: How can we practically build strong foundations and prepare those who will stand on them? 🤿 Dive Deeper: What did Aaron, Gideon, and Jeroboam have in common? 🙏🏼 Prayer: Father God, I see in Gideon how easy it is to speak the right words but still keep part of my heart for myself. Thank You for the victories You give, but please protect me from pride after success. Search my heart and show me if there is anything that takes Your place. I do not want hidden idols in my life. Change me from the inside, not just on the outside. Help me to live under Your rule every day, not only when it feels easy. Keep my heart soft and fully Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
