The Thunderbolt 5S(S) drops into battle on Emerald Vale in Assault Mode in this episode of the MechWarrior Online Gameplay Series. This build combines powerful long-range energy weapons with short-range burst damage, creating a flexible setup that can punish enemy mechs at multiple distances. The main long-range weapons are Dual ER Large Lasers and a Binary Cannon. Together, they can deliver a serious amount of armor damage from a distance, making the Thunderbolt 5S(S) an excellent mech for poking, supporting teammates and punishing enemies that expose themselves. There is one major drawback, however: heat. Firing the large energy weapons repeatedly can push the Thunderbolt's heat levels up very quickly. Having a Coolant Flush available can make the difference when a long-range engagement suddenly turns into a close-range fight. For short-range combat, this build carries Dual SRM 4 and Dual Heavy Machine Guns. Once an enemy's armor has been stripped away, the SRMs can hit exposed areas while the Heavy Machine Guns chew through components and internals. On paper, this combination can be extremely nasty against an already damaged mech. The match itself started aggressively. Our team spotted a Cicada moving toward the area where our snipers would normally position themselves. With the ER Large Lasers reaching out to long range, the Thunderbolt was able to contribute significant damage to the early engagement, helping turn the Cicada's aggressive move into an early enemy loss. From there, the battle settled into a series of smaller engagements. The enemy force was spread out and heavily thinned, allowing our team to isolate a few mechs at a time instead of fighting the entire enemy force simultaneously. As the battle moved closer, the Thunderbolt finally got opportunities to bring the SRMs and Heavy Machine Guns into the fight while the energy weapons were cooling down. This also demonstrates just how quickly the mech can build heat when multiple weapon systems are being fired without careful management. Thankfully, this wasn't a complete steamroll. Both teams took losses, and the final stages became a proper fight rather than a simple cleanup operation. A strong team, flexible weapon ranges and careful heat management made this a very enjoyable Thunderbolt 5S(S) match. What do you think of this Thunderbolt build? Would you change the weapons, or run something completely different?
