We know we probably shouldn't be gossiping. And yet, someone leans over and says, “Did you hear what happened to...?” and suddenly, we want to know. Gossip isn't simply about exchanging information. We interpret what happened, compare it with our own lives, read the reactions of the people we're talking to, and sometimes learn something about the unwritten rules of the groups we belong to. But why does any of this feel so satisfying? Psychologists have identified several reasons people engage in gossip, from gathering and validating information to building relationships, protecting a group, influencing others, venting emotions, and simply enjoying the conversation. And not everyone gets the same thing from it. So perhaps the more interesting question isn't just why we enjoy gossip. It's what we're looking for when we do.
