Before humanity. Before the dinosaurs. Before the continents took their modern form, another civilization ruled the Earth.
This cinematic documentary reconstructs the history of the Elder Things, the ancient extraterrestrial species described by H. P. Lovecraft in At the Mountains of Madness.
Arriving on a primordial Earth, the Elder Things built vast cities beneath the oceans, mastered biological engineering, and created the living protoplasmic servants known as Shoggoths. Their civilization endured for hundreds of millions of years, surviving geological upheaval, rebellion, and wars with other beings from beyond Earth.
But even a civilization capable of surviving geological ages could decline.
Their territories contracted. Ancient technologies were lost. Their Antarctic homeland froze around them. Eventually, the surviving Elder Things retreated beneath the mountains to a hidden city beside a sunless subterranean sea.
There, the historical record ends.
The Shoggoths remained.
This film presents a cinematic reconstruction of that lost history, drawing upon the mythology and deep-time history described in Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and related Cthulhu Mythos fiction.
