How to design Psy-tech (Kick & Bass)

It’s been a long time since I’ve released a full tutorial, so I’m super excited to finally be back with one of my absolute favourite new methods for kick and bass design. Over the past few months I’ve been experimenting with different layering, processing, and sound-shaping techniques, and today I’m breaking down a super simple but incredibly effective trick that can work in pretty much any genre — from house and techno to drum & bass, trap, and everything in between. In this video, I’ll be using: • Kick 3 by Sonic Academy — to sculpt a clean, punchy, controllable kick • Serum 2 by Xfer Records — for designing a powerful, flexible bass patch • FabFilter Saturn 2 — for adding warmth, harmonics, grit, and character • LFO Tool — to control movement, shaping, and that essential sidechain feel • OccularScope by Boomshanka — to visually monitor waveforms and make sure the kick and bass are perfectly aligned I’ll walk you through how to design both the kick and the bass from scratch, showing you how to choose the right waveforms, shape the envelope, tune everything properly, and create a tight relationship between the low-end elements. I’ll also cover processing techniques, including saturation, EQ, and dynamics, as well as how to pitch your bass correctly so that it matches your kick and sits perfectly in the key of your track. This method is super easy to follow, beginner-friendly, and works even if you’re producing a completely different genre — the principles stay the same.
