I Visited Historic Kamukunji — It Looks Completely Different Now!

Kamukunji is one of Nairobi's most historic public spaces — a place forever associated with Kenya's struggle for democracy and the famous Saba Saba movement of 1990. But today, Kamukunji is taking on a very different identity. I visited the newly transformed Kamukunji Community Centre to see how the historic grounds are being turned into a modern community and sports facility. The transformation includes a beautiful turf football area, basketball facilities and other spaces designed for recreation and community use. During my visit, I also noticed that most of the major work is now complete, with some final touches still being carried out. Among them are finishing works on the water piping connected to the elevated metal water tank. The redevelopment is part of the wider Nairobi River Regeneration and Engineering Works Programme, which aims to combine environmental improvement, flood management, public spaces and community facilities. What makes this project particularly interesting is the history of the location. Kamukunji Grounds became a major symbol of Kenya's democratic struggle, especially during the Saba Saba movement of July 1990. The site was also officially gazetted as a heritage site, recognising its importance in Kenya's history. Today, the same grounds are being given a completely different purpose — from political rallies and historic public gatherings to football, basketball, recreation and community activities.
