The bottle in your shower is not what you think it is. The word "shampoo" was stolen from an Indian entrepreneur, transformed by the same chemical factories that made poison gas in World War I, and turned into a daily habit by advertising campaigns designed to make you ashamed of your own body — your hair was never actually dirty. In this episode of Hidden History, we trace shampoo from its true origin: a 250-year-old Sanskrit therapeutic tradition called champo, brought to Britain by Bengali entrepreneur Sake Dean Mahomed in 1814. We follow it through the postwar chemical industry that needed new markets for its weapons-grade infrastructure, through the 1950s advertising campaigns that manufactured a daily dependency that didn't exist, and into the $50 billion global industry that now sells Ayurvedic remedies — the very tradition it erased — back to consumers at luxury prices. This is not a story about hair. It's a story about how industries are built not on need, but on the manufacturing of need.
