Benjamin Netanyahu is running to serve again as Israel’s prime minister in the country’s first general election since 2023’s October 7th attacks. Under fire for his leadership during that major security failure, and facing a long-running corruption investigation, he is nevertheless not far behind his main challenger, Gadi Eisenkott, in the polls. Coalition building is essential in Israel’s electoral system, so even if polling is correct, the outcome of the election, set for October 27th, is far from clear. AFP’s Will Edwards explains what’s at stake.
