Lucy takes her comedy across the Atlantic in **Lucy in London**, a rare full-length television special starring **Lucille Ball**. 🇬🇧
Originally broadcast by CBS on October 24, 1966, Lucy in London took Ball outside the familiar world of her weekly sitcom and placed her in a much more ambitious television production built around London itself.
Created in connection with The Lucy Show storyline that sent Lucy Carmichael overseas, the special combines comedy, music, sightseeing, celebrity appearances, and location footage to create something much larger than a standard sitcom episode.
The result is both entertainment and a remarkable mid-1960s time capsule—Lucille Ball experiencing Swinging London at a moment when British fashion, music, and popular culture were capturing the world's attention.
📺 *PRESERVED & ENHANCED BY WALT*
A full-length television special like Lucy in London presents a different preservation challenge from a conventional studio sitcom.
The program moves between different locations, lighting conditions, backgrounds, camera setups, and production environments. Surviving vintage material can also vary in clarity and contrast from scene to scene.
For this WALT presentation, our team worked with available source material to improve the overall viewing experience while preserving the distinctly 1960s character of the program.
Our process focuses on reducing distracting source artifacts and noise, improving visible detail and tonal balance, and carefully upscaling the picture for modern displays. Rather than forcing every sequence to look identical, we review the material throughout the process and account for natural differences between scenes.
Location footage deserves particular care. Architecture, street scenes, signs, clothing, vehicles, crowds, and other background details aren't just scenery today—they're part of the historical value of the program. Enhancement is intended to make those surviving details easier to appreciate without creating an unnaturally sharpened or artificial image.
Audio is also reviewed and enhanced where the source permits, with attention to dialogue, music, performances, and changes in sound between different portions of the production.
Each WALT title is individually evaluated and prepared by our team. The source itself guides the restoration and enhancement decisions rather than one identical automated treatment being applied across our library.

🎬 *WHY THIS SPECIAL MATTERS*
Lucy in London captures more than Lucille Ball doing comedy overseas.
It preserves a moment when American television was becoming increasingly ambitious about where it could take viewers. London wasn't simply a backdrop—the city, its culture, and the excitement surrounding Britain in the 1960s became part of the experience.
For Lucy fans, it's an unusual opportunity to see one of television's greatest performers outside the familiar boundaries of her weekly series. For today's viewers, the location material also offers a fascinating visual record of London during one of the city's most culturally influential eras.
That's exactly the kind of television artifact WALT believes deserves to be preserved and rediscovered.
Presented as part of WALT’s **Main Street collection**, celebrating the programs, personalities, and moments that shaped American popular culture.
