A brand-new luxury SUV in the driveway can make a household look a whole lot richer overnight, without anyone earning another dollar. So how much of the wealth we see is actually wealth?
In this video we follow one $65,000 SUV from the dealership to the driveway: $5,000 down, $60,000 borrowed at 7.5%. Stretching that loan from five years to seven drops the payment from about $1,200 to about $920 a month, and adds roughly $5,000 in interest and two extra years of payments. Then we look past the car at the house behind it, at leases and credit cards, and at what happens when one family's mortgage, car loan and card payment all land in the same monthly budget.
From the street, two driveways can look almost identical. The financial lives underneath them can be completely different. This video explains why the monthly payment is never the whole financial story.
All figures in the video are illustrative examples, not real households or loan offers.
