Fisher Investments’ Founder, Ken Fisher, Debunks: “Who Needs Foreign?”

Ken Fisher, Founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Fisher Investments reviews a chapter from his book, Debunkery, to address the false belief investors should only invest in companies from their home country. Ken explains that while many investors may gravitate toward familiar companies, this preference can lead to unintended risks and overlooked opportunities. For example, if an investor only owns stocks from the United States, they may be overexposed to the Information Technology sector since those companies are more prevalent there. Ken says concentrating investments in one country can lead to underperformance if the sector that dominates that country lags the global market. He points out that while US and non-US stocks have historically delivered similar long-term returns, leadership can shift for years at a time. By investing globally, investors can reduce volatility and improve their chances of achieving their investment goals.
