Xuanzang crossed deserts, mountains and kingdoms in search of answers — and his journey eventually brought him to Nalanda, one of the greatest centres of learning in ancient India.
In this Jalebi Tales adventure, discover how Xuanzang left Tang China without official permission, survived the dangerous journey across Central Asia, reached India, studied under the great scholar Śīlabhadra, and became part of the extraordinary world of Nalanda.
At Nalanda, thousands of monks and scholars studied philosophy, logic, grammar, medicine, astronomy and more. Its vast manuscript culture preserved knowledge in an age before printing presses, when every text had to be copied carefully by hand.
Xuanzang eventually returned to China carrying hundreds of Sanskrit works. There, he worked with teams of scholars to translate many of them into Chinese.
Centuries later, Nalanda declined and much of its manuscript world disappeared. Xuanzang’s journey therefore became even more important — because the texts he carried, translated and preserved helped parts of that intellectual tradition survive far beyond India.
This is the remarkable story of a traveller who went looking for answers… and became one of history’s great carriers of knowledge.
