Type I is the EPA 608 section for small appliances: refrigerators, freezers, window units, dehumidifiers and water coolers. Like every section it is scored on its own, 18 of 25 to pass, and it counts only together with Core. This guide covers everything Type I tests in two sections, one visual at a time, then all 25 practice questions from the study guide and a cheat sheet of the numbers to remember. The rules are taught from the Section 608 regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) as they stand in 2026.
The two sections:
• Small appliances — the EPA definition (factory-sealed, 5 lb or less), what is and is not Type I, hermetic systems, the refrigerants you will see, piercing and service valves
• Recovery — passive against active equipment, the 80/90 rule and the 4 in. Hg alternative, a dead compressor, solderless access fittings, phosgene, the recovery sequence, R-12 to R-134a, relabeling, safety
How to use it:
• Each practice question holds a 10-second countdown. Answer before the timer ends; pause if you need longer.
• Use the chapters to come back to any section; the cheat sheet is the last one.
