The Grand Theft Auto franchise is famous for its climactic, city-shattering final missions, many of which force the protagonist into desperate, high-stakes confrontations that redefine the game's world. In GTA: San Andreas, the mission "End of the Line" tasks CJ and Sweet with storming Big Smoke's crack palace while Los Santos descends into a full-scale riot. However, this triumphant family victory inadvertently provides the perfect, chaotic smokescreen for the corrupt Officer Tenpenny to escape, leaving the city burning in his wake. In contrast, the end of GTA III, "The Exchange," operates on cold, precise calculation rather than chaos; Catalina strips Claude of his weapons and money under the guise of a ransom for Maria, forcing the player to navigate a brutal, seven-minute rocket-launcher pursuit across a dam in a fight where rescue was never truly the objective.
While some games end in desperate survival, others focus on bloody ascension and unresolved vendettas. In Vice City's "Keep Your Friends Close...", Tommy Vercetti flips the script on the typical ambush, systematically executing Lance Vance and Sonny Forelli in his own mansion to become the undisputed crime kingpin of the city. GTA IV offers a deeply personal, branching conclusion, forcing players to choose between the "Deal" and "Revenge" paths, leaving Niko Bellic's quest for vengeance against Dimitri permanently ambiguous in the official canon. Finally, GTA V introduced three potential endings, but Rockstar eventually used GTA Online updates—such as the Kortz Center Heist and appearances by Franklin, Trevor, and an older Michael—to definitively canonize "Option C: Deathwish," proving that the only true ending was the one that kept the franchise's most lucrative characters alive.
