“Forty and Finally” is an original song after I was diagnosed autistic and with ADHD (combined presentation) at age 40. After a lifetime of masking, overwhelm and wondering why my mind worked differently, I finally had words for what I had been experiencing.”
This song is about looking back at those years differently. About the masks we wear, the pressure to appear “normal,” sensory overload, shame, survival — and eventually self-acceptance.
If you were diagnosed autistic later in life, are currently questioning whether you might be autistic, or spent years feeling like you never quite fit, I hope something in this song speaks to you.
“I wasn’t broken, I was built this way.”

[Lyrics]
[Verse 1]
Forty years in,
and I still missed the signs,
why the room felt loud
while I was reading one line.
I called it stress,
called it being “too much,”
called it bad sleep,
called it bad luck.
[Pre-Chorus]
Then you said my name
like a door unlocked.
All the years I hid
came falling off.
I wasn’t broken,
I was built this way.
I just needed words
for the shape I made.
[Chorus]
Forty and finally,
I know my mind.
Forty and finally,
I don’t have to hide.
I was never lazy,
never out of line.
Forty and finally,
I can breathe this time.
(Forty and finally)
[Verse 2]
I kept a smile on
like it paid the rent,
moved through the world
acting “normal” again.
Masks in my pockets,
keys in my hand,
trying to pass
like I understood the plan.
[Pre-Chorus]
But the missing pieces
fit in place tonight.
Every old mistake
got a different light.
I was not too late,
I was not too far.
I was just surviving
with a quiet war.
[Chorus]
Forty and finally,
I know my mind.
Forty and finally,
I don’t have to hide.
I was never lazy,
never out of line.
Forty and finally,
I can breathe this time.
(Forty and finally)
[Rap Verse]
Forty on the clock, had a lifetime in the fog.
Everybody saw the mask, nobody saw the cost.
Told me, “Man up,” “Fall in line,” “Focus harder.”
I was drowning in a room full of talk and noise and pressure.
Got the label, got the language, gave my shadow some shape.
Got this grief in my chest ’cause I wish I’d known it sooner.
Still, I’m here, still I shine through the fracture.
Not late to my life, I just needed the answer.
Yeah, I lost some years trying to be what they wanted.
Now I keep it real, every scar’s got a story.
Every line on my face says I made it through the storm,
and I ain’t ashamed — I’m becoming my form.
[Bridge]
Say it to my face,
I’m not less than this.
I was fighting for my life
with a nervous fist.
All that shame I carried,
let it hit the floor.
I don’t need your pity,
I need room for more.
I need room for more.
I need room for more.
(Yeah, I need room)
[Chorus]
Forty and finally,
I know my mind.
Forty and finally,
I don’t have to hide.
I was never lazy,
never out of line.
Forty and finally,
I can breathe this time.
(Forty and finally)
[Outro]
Forty and finally,
I found my words.
Forty and finally,
I know what I heard.
Forty and finally,
I was here all along.
Forty and finally,
now I know I belong.
