Though its title hints at a European origin, the tune known across American old-time and bluegrass circles as "Spanish Fandango" is actually a mid-19th-century American parlor guitar composition written by Ohio-based musician Henry Worrall. Originally published as a showpiece to mimic a Spanish style, its bright, rolling melody in a triple-meter rhythm quickly escaped the parlor rooms. It became a massive folk hit, spreading through the rural South via itinerant guitarists, banjo players, and eventually mountain dulcimer players. In fact, Worrall's piece was so influential that its open-guitar tuning (Open G) became widely known simply as "Fandango tuning" among early blues and old-time fingerpickers.
