DCS National Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale has given explosive evidence at the Madlanga Commission about criminal gangs operating from inside South Africa’s correctional facilities. Thobakgale told the Commission about so-called “hammer men”, who he said are responsible for eliminating witnesses or others whose deaths could financially benefit gangs. He also testified about drugs, extortion, smuggled communication devices and correctional officials allegedly enabling contraband inside prisons.
