The speed of light is the fastest thing in the universe. Nothing can outrun it. At 670 million miles per hour, it crosses the Earth-Moon gap in 1.3 seconds and reaches Mars in just 3 minutes. It sounds like the ultimate superpower, until you measure it against the galaxy.
The Milky Way stretches 100,000 light-years across. A signal sent from the far side would not arrive for 100,000 years. The nearest star, Proxima Centauri, sits over 4 light-years away, meaning even a light-speed message takes nearly a decade for a simple round trip. And physical spacecraft? They travel far slower than light, face lethal radiation from interstellar dust at relativistic speeds, carry staggering energy requirements, and have no practical way to slow down at their destination.
But the cruelest barrier isn't distance or energy. It's time. Any alien civilization observing Earth from thousands of light-years away isn't seeing us, they're seeing our ancient past. And if they launched a ship toward us, they'd arrive to find a world that has changed beyond recognition. Civilizations rise and fall in thousands of years. The galaxy is billions of years old. The odds of two civilizations existing at the same time, close enough to make contact, may be vanishingly small.
This is the story of why the speed of light — the absolute maximum velocity of reality, might still be too slow for alien civilizations to ever reach Earth.
