What happens to your child’s education and future if you leave the city and move to the mountains? That was the biggest question Rahul and Garima faced when they decided to leave Delhi and build a life in Manali with their daughter. They were doing well in their careers and could have stayed back, earned more and continued climbing professionally. But their daughter was about to move from playschool to regular school and they realised that if they wanted a different childhood for her, this was probably the right time to make the move. But this wasn’t an impulsive decision. Before choosing Manali, they evaluated schools, healthcare, AQI, internet, power supply, connectivity and the cost of living. They also made sure their careers could continue remotely and maintained a 6-month emergency fund. And financially, the change has been significant. Their monthly expenses dropped from roughly ₹80,000–₹1 lakh in Delhi to around ₹40,000–₹50,000 in Manali. Their daughter’s school fee went from roughly ₹12,000–₹13,000 to ₹2,800 a month, and today they say they are able to save around 40% more than before. In this episode, Rahul and Garima break down what it actually takes to move from a metro city to the mountains with a child from education and exposure to careers, finances and the realities of mountain life. Because for them, the move was never just about escaping Delhi. It was about choosing the kind of childhood and life they wanted to build as a family.
