For decades, the Bar U Ranch stood as one of the greatest cattle empires in Canadian history. Founded in the foothills of southern Alberta in the 1880s, the ranch grew into a vast operation that helped define the early cattle industry of Western Canada. Thousands of cattle moved across the open range, cowboys worked enormous roundups, and the Bar U became known far beyond Alberta for the scale and quality of its livestock. Under powerful owners such as George Lane, the ranch expanded even further. It became famous not only for cattle, but also for breeding Percheron horses and supplying animals to farms and businesses across the country. At its peak, the Bar U represented wealth, ambition, and the promise of the Canadian West. But the world around it was changing. Open-range ranching began to disappear. Land was fenced and divided, transportation improved, agriculture became more mechanized, and the economics of running enormous ranching operations became increasingly difficult. Ownership changed, markets shifted, and the old system that had made the Bar U powerful slowly faded away. In this documentary, we explore how the Bar U Ranch became one of Canada’s greatest ranching empires, the cowboys and workers who built it, the famous owners who expanded it, and the economic and social changes that eventually brought the old ranching era to an end. Today, much of the Bar U survives as a National Historic Site — but the enormous ranching empire that once helped shape Western Canada belongs to another time. This is the rise and fall of the Bar U Ranch — one of the most important ranches in Canadian history. #BarURanch #Alberta #CanadianHistory #Ranching #Cowboys #WesternCanada #AlbertaHistory #OldCanada #HistoryDocumentary #ForgottenCanada
