Snails Galore!

Snails are fascinating little animals that can be found in a variety of environments. Aquatic snails live in water. Saltwater species can be found in oceans and seas, while freshwater species inhabit rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. There are also terrestrial snails, which live on land and make their homes in forests, gardens, and grasslands. The northern Mississippi River region is home to many different kinds of aquatic and terrestrial snails. Both types feed on decaying plant matter, helping to keep aquatic ecosystems clean and terrestrial ecosystems healthy by recycling nutrients back into the environment. Snails are remarkable because they use a muscular foot to move their bodies and shells from one place to another. Although they are known for moving slowly, their shells provide protection from predators and harsh weather. Many people may not realize that snails also have teeth. Thousands of tiny teeth are arranged on a ribbon-like tongue called a radula, which helps them scrape food from plants and other surfaces. Snails are truly amazing creatures.
