Ro-Ro Vessel Hazards and Risk Controls | Fire Safety, Stability & Cargo Operations
Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessels are essential to global vehicle and cargo transportation. However, their design and operating characteristics create serious safety challenges, including fire in vehicle decks, cargo movement, stability loss, water ingress, and rapid fire spread.
In this video, we explore the major hazards associated with Ro-Ro vessels and the risk controls used to improve onboard safety. We examine fire prevention and detection, vehicle deck monitoring, cargo stowage and securing, stability management, emergency response, and the additional risks associated with alternative-fuel vehicles.
We also discuss how risk-based stowage planning tools and research initiatives such as the LASH FIRE project can support safer cargo operations and help reduce fire risks.
⚓ Topics covered in this video:
Introduction to Ro-Ro vessels and their operational characteristics
Stability risks, free-surface effects, and water ingress
Vehicle deck fire hazards and fire spread
Fire detection, monitoring, and boundary protection
Cargo stowage, distribution, and securing
Alternative-fuel vehicle hazards, including lithium-ion battery fires
Risk assessment and preventive safety measures
Emergency response and crew preparedness
LASH FIRE research and stowage planning tools
The importance of IMO requirements, the vessel's Safety Management System (SMS), and approved emergency procedures
Who should watch?
This video is useful for marine engineering students, deck cadets, marine engineers, deck officers, Chief Engineers, ship officers, maritime instructors, and candidates preparing for MEO oral examinations.
Learning objective: Understand the major Ro-Ro vessel hazards and learn how systematic risk assessment, effective cargo management, fire prevention, and emergency preparedness can reduce operational risks.
⚠️ Safety note: Always follow the vessel's approved Safety Management System, emergency procedures, applicable statutory requirements, and the latest guidance from the IMO, flag Administration, and relevant authorities. Confirm the applicability and effective dates of regulatory amendments before relying on them operationally.
