“But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” — Romans 8:10 (ESV)
What does Paul mean when he declares that **“the Spirit is life”**? Is eternal life something believers will only experience after death, or is it a present reality already at work within them?
Welcome to **Part 2 of *The DNA of Eternal Life***, a five-part sermon series by **Jimmy Ssegendo**, exploring the profound truths in Romans 8:10–11.
In this session, we concentrate on Paul's statement: *“The Spirit is life because of righteousness.”*
The human body remains subject to mortality because of sin, but the believer's life in Christ is rooted in something greater than physical existence. Through Christ, the believer has received a new life — a life whose source is the Spirit of God.
This raises some important theological questions:
What does the Bible mean when it says that the Spirit is life?
Is the Spirit merely the source of future resurrection, or is He the present source of life in the believer?
What is the relationship between righteousness, the indwelling Spirit, and eternal life?
How can the believer possess eternal life while still living in a mortal body?
What is the difference between physical life (*bios*) and the life of God (*zoe*)?
If the believer's body is subject to death, what happens to the life of the Spirit?
We will examine these questions through Scripture, seeking to understand the distinction between the mortality of the body and the life that belongs to those who are in Christ.
*The central question is this: If the Spirit is life in the believer, what does that tell us about the nature of eternal life?*
This is more than a discussion about life after death. It is an exploration of the life believers already possess in Christ and what that means for their identity, existence, and hope.
