India’s Ethnic / Ethnolinguistic Groups by Population | 1951–2026 Explore more than 75 years of demographic and linguistic change in India through an animated bar chart race showing the population of major ethnolinguistic and mother-tongue groups from 1951 to 2026. This visualization follows some of India’s largest linguistic communities, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Odia, Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese, Maithili, Bhili / Bhilodi, Santali, Kashmiri, Gondi, Nepali, Sindhi, Dogri, Konkani, Kurukh / Oraon, Khandeshi, Tulu, Meitei / Manipuri, Bodo, Khasi, Ho, Garo and Mundari. India is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world. Its population includes hundreds of languages and mother tongues belonging to several major language families, including Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, Austroasiatic and Tibeto-Burman languages. The historical series is primarily based on Census of India language and mother-tongue statistics. The 2011 Census C-16 table provides population distributions by mother tongue, while historical Census statements allow comparison with earlier decades. Census India Because Census classifications changed over time, the 1951–1970 portion should be interpreted as a reconstructed historical extension rather than a perfectly comparable official annual series. In particular, some mother tongues were regrouped under larger languages in later censuses. There are also important historical data gaps. The 1981 Census was not conducted in Assam, and complete Tamil language records were unavailable after census records in Tamil Nadu were lost; therefore Tamil, Assamese and Bodo totals for 1981 are incomplete in the official historical series. The 1991 Census was not conducted in Jammu & Kashmir, affecting Kashmiri and Dogri figures. Census India Values between census benchmark years are reconstructed using interpolation for visualization. 2012–2026 figures are modeled estimates rather than official language-census counts, using the 2011 language distribution together with Government of India population projections. Language, mother tongue, ethnicity and cultural identity are related concepts but are not identical, so the categories in this visualization should primarily be understood as linguistic or ethnolinguistic population groups.
