Painting a Waterfall | Alla Prima Technique

In this video, Richard Somonte paints the Iguazú Falls using the alla prima technique, working directly on the canvas and developing the landscape through successive layers of colour, light and texture. The Iguazú Falls lie on the border between Argentina and Brazil and form one of the largest waterfall systems in the world. The river descends through a series of numerous cascades across almost three kilometres, with drops of up to 80 metres. The surrounding rainforest is part of the Atlantic Forest and is home to an exceptionally rich variety of flora and fauna. The landscape has also attracted artists and naturalists. In Argentina, the landscape architect Carlos Thays studied the Iguazú Falls in 1902, contributing to the early proposals for protecting the area, which eventually led to the creation of Iguazú National Park in 1934. Today, Iguazú National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for both the exceptional landscape of the waterfalls and the biodiversity of the surrounding subtropical forest.
