History
------------
Bugis+: From the Avant-Garde "Iluma" to the Pulse of Youth Culture
1. The Origin: Born as "Iluma" (2009)
The Launch:
Developed by Jack Investment and officially opened in 2009 as Iluma, an arts and entertainment-themed retail mall along Victoria Street.
Award-Winning Architecture:
Designed by celebrated architecture firm WOHA in collaboration with Berlin-based media architecture studio realities:united.
The "Crystal Mesh" Media Facade:
The mall gained international architectural acclaim for its dramatic, curvaceous exterior wrapped in thousands of custom tessellated crystal panels.
Embedded within this faceted white mosaic were light-emitting diodes (LEDs) forming an enormous interactive media screen capable of displaying dynamic light art, animations, and messages directly onto the Victoria Street skyline at night.
The Early Concept:
Iluma originally positioned itself around late-night arts, indie boutiques, and rooftop nightspots, but struggled initially with footfall and interior tenant synergy.
2. CapitaLand Acquisition & Rebranding to "Bugis+" (2011–2012)
The Takeover:
In 2011, CapitaLand Mall Trust acquired Iluma for S$295 million to integrate it strategically with the mega-popular Bugis Junction right across the street.
The S$38 Million Makeover:
Between 2011 and 2012, the interior was comprehensively reconfigured: internal maze-like bottlenecks were opened up into bright, seamless atriums, and sightlines across retail floors were streamlined.
The Overhead Link Bridge:
A wide, air-conditioned covered link bridge was constructed across Victoria Street on Level 2, seamlessly connecting the mall directly to Bugis Junction and the Bugis MRT Station interchange (East-West and Downtown Lines).
The New Name:
In mid-2012, it officially reopened as Bugis+ (pronounced Bugis Plus), shifting its positioning squarely toward trendy youth lifestyle, street fashion, fast fashion, and casual dining.
3. Flagship Anchors & Entertainment Hub
Streetwear & Fast Fashion:
Bugis+ quickly became one of Singapore’s top youth retail hubs, bringing in sprawling multi-level flagship stores, including massive duplex concepts for brands like Uniqlo and trendy streetwear labels.
Cinema & Late-Night Hangouts:
The upper floors feature a popular FilmGarde Cineplex (later modernized and refreshed).
It also developed a reputation for entertainment staples, including arcade gaming centers, KTV rooms, billiard halls, and youth-oriented casual F&B.
4. Modern Synergy: The Bugis Commercial Twin
Today, Bugis+ and Bugis Junction function as an inseparable shopping powerhouse:
Bugis Junction offers the nostalgic shophouse-inspired street mall feel with heritage department store retail.
Bugis+ delivers the high-energy, vertical, neon-lit youth fashion and entertainment vibe.
Together, they form the retail backbone of the Bras Basah.Bugis educational and cultural precinct, packed with polytechnic and university students, creatives, and international tourists.
