When Fear Becomes an Idol | Are You Trusting God...or Trying to Control the Outcome?

Fear isn’t always the problem. The question is: "What does your fear get to do?" Does it get to shape how you see the future? Determine who you trust? Tell you what you have to protect? Convince you that you need to control an outcome God has asked you to surrender? In this episode of Ordinary Idiots, we look at the story of Jeroboam in 1 Kings 11–14 and trace a sobering progression: A thought becomes fear. Fear becomes strategy. Strategy becomes an idol. The idol becomes a system. And eventually, the system becomes normal. Jeroboam had already received a promise from God, but fear convinced him that he needed to secure for himself what God had promised to provide. And if we’re willing to look inward before looking at everyone else, we may discover that we do the same thing. Sometimes what we call “wisdom” is actually **fear with a strategy**. But this episode isn’t ultimately about condemnation. It’s about repentance...and the invitation of Jesus to come home. Repentance isn’t simply feeling bad about what we’ve done. It’s allowing Jesus to change the way we see reality so that we can change the direction of our lives. It’s opening our hands again and learning to trust our Dad. So here’s the question I’m sitting with: "What am I afraid will happen if I actually trust God?"
