The 1984 Toyota MR2 arrived as a surprisingly small answer to a very big question: could Toyota build a genuinely engaging sports car without making it exotic or unreachable? The result was a compact, wedge-shaped machine that brought a mid-engine layout and lightweight character into a much more attainable package. Known by its AW11 chassis designation, the first-generation Toyota MR2 became an important part of the growing Japanese performance-car culture of the 1980s. Its proportions, layout, and playful personality gave enthusiasts something that felt very different from the larger sports cars surrounding it.
