Remember when Fazoli’s seemed to be everywhere? The red signs. The drive-thru pasta. The pizza. The spaghetti. And of course, those warm garlic breadsticks. In this episode of Disappearing Past, we’re looking back at the history of Fazoli’s — how it started in Lexington, Kentucky, how it exploded across the country in the 1990s and early 2000s, why so many locations disappeared, and what still survives today. For my family, Fazoli’s is very personal. When my first two children were young, we moved from the city out to the suburbs and discovered Fazoli’s during their school years. My children are half Italian and loved Italian food, and Fazoli’s gave us a place where we could enjoy pasta, pizza and breadsticks without spending a fortune. Then, little by little, the locations around us started disappearing. But Fazoli’s isn’t completely gone. There is still one in College Station, Texas, and on October 4th my family and I are going back. I’ll be making a separate Disappearing Past follow-up video from that visit so we can see what Fazoli’s looks like today, what has changed, what hasn’t, and whether those breadsticks are still as good as we remember. I want to hear your Fazoli’s memories too. Did you grow up eating there? What city was your Fazoli’s in? What did you always order? Did your location have a drive-thru? And how many breadsticks was too many breadsticks? Who besides me would love to see Fazoli’s come back to more towns? Tell me your memories in the comments, and let me know what restaurant, store, mall, or place from your past you would love to see featured next.
