What began on a train journey towards Manchester would eventually turn into a day of trouble involving Millwall, Manchester City and Man United, with violence before, during and after the match at Maine Road. Millwall supporters travelling north for the match got off the train early at Stockport, where they became involved in a confrontation with Manchester United supporters who were travelling through the area on their way to Nottingham Forest. With the rival groups now in the Manchester area, the trouble didn't end there. As the day developed, supporters converged on Maine Road, where violence broke out during the match before further disorder followed after the final whistle, turning what was already a highly charged fixture into one of the more memorable episodes of 1990s football hooliganism. In this video, we follow the events of Manchester City vs Millwall in 1999 from the early trouble at Stockport, through the build-up around Manchester and the scenes inside Maine Road, to the violence that followed after the match.
