How were the moai of Easter Island moved? On Easter Sunday in 1722, Dutch sailors found giant stone statues on a tiny Pacific island and could not explain how people without heavy timber or stout rope had raised them. The island's old stories gave a short answer: the statues walked. For a long time, outsiders preferred wooden sledges and log rollers, and a darker story grew from it, of an island that used up its forests for statues. But the moai lying along the ancient roads tell something else. They lean forward on wide, D-shaped bases. In 1986, Czech engineer Pavel Pavel and explorer Thor Heyerdahl rocked a real statue forward with ropes and a team of 16. In 2012, archaeologists Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo built a 4.35-ton concrete copy, and 18 people with three ropes walked it 100 meters in about 40 minutes. The roads fit too: about 4.5 meters wide and curved gently inward to steady each step. In 2025, a study of nearly 1,000 moai concluded that the lean and the base were part of a design for walking. And archaeologists think a moai's coral eyes were set in only after it reached its platform, so the statues likely traveled with blank eyes. ● Sources: Lipo & Hunt (2025) Journal of Archaeological Science "The Walking Moai Hypothesis", ScienceDaily (2025), phys.org (2025), HuffPost (2012), Radio Prague International and Wikipedia "Pavel Pavel", New World Encyclopedia "Moai", University of California news "The mystery of Easter Island revealed?", Helene Martinsson-Wallin "The Eyes of the Moai", University of Arizona news (ecocide study) ● The pictures are AI-made illustrations of the story, not real photographs of the people or places.
