With Storm Boelo making its presence felt, we set off from Dovedale Trailhead in the hope of finding some shelter in the dramatic valleys of the White Peak. Today’s adventure takes us on a circular hike through one of England’s historic counties, exploring the spectacular limestone landscapes of Dovedale and the Manifold Valley, with the iconic Thor’s Cave waiting to be discovered along the way. Our journey begins at Dovedale, where our first challenge is to see whether the famous Stepping Stones are crossable. With conditions against us, we make the sensible decision to turn back and find a safer crossing closer to the car park. From there, we skirt around the southern slopes of Thorpe Cloud before making our ascent to take in the views. Returning to the River Dove, we follow the valley northwards, surrounded by the remarkable limestone formations that make this part of the White Peak so special. The path leads us to Reynards Cave, where a short climb rewards us with a closer look at this fascinating natural feature. Continuing through the valley, we pass the imposing Ilam Rock and the mysterious Dove Holes before arriving at the picturesque village of Milldale. Leaving the shelter of the valley behind, we soon discover just how powerful the wind can be as we cross the exposed fields towards Stanshope and then Wetton. With the weather making its presence felt, a well-earned pub lunch provides the perfect opportunity to warm up and recharge before tackling the next part of our adventure. After lunch, we use the churchyard as a shortcut out of Wetton and join Thor’s Lane, heading towards one of the highlights of the day: Thor’s Cave. First, we visit the nearby viewpoint before descending to the cave itself. Stepping inside, we take in the incredible views looking north across the White Peak, a truly memorable sight even with Storm Boelo looming overhead. From Thor’s Cave, we descend to the valley floor and begin our return journey along the beautiful Manifold Valley. Leaving the valley, we climb once more, passing the historic Throwley Hall before following Lodge Lane back towards the River Dove. Our route then takes us past Ilam Hall, now a Youth Hostel, and through the charming village of Ilam, where we stop to admire the village cross at the junction. With the final stretch ahead, we cross the open fields and make our way back towards the River Dove, bringing this challenging and rewarding circular walk to an end. Despite the blustery conditions, this hike showcases some of the finest scenery the White Peak has to offer, from Dovedale’s limestone cliffs and riverside paths to the dramatic opening of Thor’s Cave.
