Fish Triangle Method — Chart Plotting Explained | CMG, Fixes, Current Rate | Chief Mate / 2nd Mate 🧭 This lesson explains the Fish Triangle plotting method. It is taught mainly for Mate’s exams and is used only when running fix or three point bearing cannot be applied. Although it is rarely used in real navigation, it appears frequently in exams. So understanding the logic and plotting sequence is important. When to Use the Fish Triangle Method Use this method when: • Three position lines (PLs) are staggered • Running fix cannot be solved due to insufficient data • Three point bearing cannot be used because PLs do not intersect • Only the set of current is known and the rate is not given Typical Exam Data Given • Three staggered PLs • Course To Steer (CTS) • Engine speed • Set of current (rate not given) You may be asked to calculate: • One, two, or all three positions • Course Made Good (CMG) • Speed Made Good (SMG) • Rate of current Step by Step Plot (Concept Flow) Plot first and third PLs Select any point on the first PL (Point A) Draw the CTS from A to cut the third PL (Point B) Mark engine distances along CTS to create Points C and D Transfer PLs through C and D to find Point E Draw the current set from C to meet the transferred PL Draw the ratio line through Points E and H Intersect the ratio line with the second PL to find the 6 o’clock fix Plot the 5 o’clock and 6:30 fixes Join the fixes. The Course Made Good must pass through all of them If the current line does not meet the plot correctly, change the first chosen point A to the opposite side of Point E and re plot.
