Sanath Jayasuriya, Cricket Podcast, Sri Lanka Cricket, Sanath Jayasuriya Batting and Cricket Legends — discover the unfiltered side of one of cricket’s most iconic attacking batsmen, in his own words.
In this exclusive episode of Built From Zero, Sanath Jayasuriya sits down with Sanjay Bhasin for a conversation that goes far beyond runs, wickets and the 1996 World Cup.
We all remember the fearless attacking batsman.
But was Sanath Jayasuriya really fearless?
In this conversation, he reveals that even at the highest level there was fear, tension and pressure before walking out to bat—and explains how that fear gradually disappeared once he started playing, concentrating and getting into the game.
He also reveals something many cricket fans may not expect:
He was not originally an opening batsman.
Jayasuriya started lower down the order at No. 7 or No. 8, bowled left-arm spin, and later took the risk of moving to the top of the order. He even admits that his technique was not the best, but his natural instinct was always attacking cricket.
From growing up in Matara with limited cricket facilities to representing Sri Lanka, his journey was built on years of hard work and sacrifice. A crucial Pakistan tour changed his career after he got an unexpected opportunity, scored a hundred and then followed it with two double centuries.
The conversation also takes us inside one of the biggest moments in cricket history—the 1996 Cricket World Cup.
Sanath explains that Sri Lanka initially believed they could reach the semi-finals. They entered as underdogs, but confidence inside the team kept growing. He also shares what the captain and management told the players before the final: treat it as another game and enjoy the cricket rather than thinking about the pressure of a World Cup final.
But this podcast is about much more than cricketing success.
Sanath opens up about difficult phases in his career, being left out of the team, dealing with pressure and continuing to work because of his passion for representing his country.
He talks about:
• Why giving up is easy but maintaining hard work is difficult
• How bowling helped him survive bad batting phases
• His pre-match rituals and superstitions
• Why he kept his bat next to his bed before matches
• Why he went to the temple the night before a game
• Staying fit even after retirement
• Why fame is temporary
• The difference between playing and coaching
• Handling players after defeats in the social-media era
• Why calculated risks matter in cricket—and even in business
• Why talent alone is never enough
• Why discipline became one of the biggest lessons of his life
One of the most personal moments comes when Sanath explains that although people remember him as aggressive and attacking on the cricket field, outside cricket he sees himself as a simple and humble person. He also says fame is temporary—when you play, you may be famous, but after retirement you become another normal person.
This is not simply a Sanath Jayasuriya interview.
It is a conversation about fear, confidence, discipline, failure, fame, risk, family, hard work, Sri Lanka cricket and the person behind the legendary cricketer.
