Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay visited Coimbatore on October 16, 2026, attracting significant public attention and political interest. His visit included a roadshow through key parts of the city and the inauguration of the Periyar Arivulagam, a major educational and scientific centre located in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore. Vijay's roadshow covered approximately 11.4 kilometres, passing through important areas including Avinashi Road and Peelamedu before reaching Gandhipuram. TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) cadres and members of the public gathered along the route to welcome the Chief Minister. Extensive security arrangements and traffic restrictions were reportedly implemented to manage the crowds and ensure the smooth conduct of the visit. One of the major highlights was the inauguration of Periyar Arivulagam, a large-scale educational and scientific facility reportedly built at a cost of approximately ₹300 crore. The eight-storey complex features a library, a children's library, a science centre, a planetarium and other educational facilities designed to encourage scientific awareness, reading habits and learning among students and the general public. The project has also become a subject of political discussion, as it was initiated during the previous DMK government under former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who laid its foundation stone in November 2024. Following the inauguration, political exchanges emerged between leaders of the DMK and TVK regarding the project's implementation, recognition and the alleged omission of the 'Naan Mudhalvan' scheme's name. These claims and counterclaims have added a political dimension to Vijay's Coimbatore visit. The visit also included government programmes involving development initiatives and public welfare measures. The large gathering, roadshow arrangements and inauguration have made the event an important topic in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
