Why did Jesus curse a fig tree when it wasn't even the season for figs? That one detail has confused readers for two thousand years , and it is actually the key that unlocks the entire story. Once you see what the leaves were really saying, the whole passage changes. This is the only miracle Jesus ever performed where He destroyed something. Every other recorded miracle gives life, heals, restores, or multiplies. This one is different. On a Monday morning during the final week of His life, Jesus walked up to a fig tree, found it had nothing to give, and spoke a verdict over it. By the next morning it had withered from the roots up. Most people read the story and ask whether Jesus lost His temper. That is the wrong question entirely. The line that seems to make Jesus unfair , that it was not the season for figs , is not a problem with the story. It is the confession at the center of it. Because if it was not the season for figs, no honest tree should have had leaves yet. The other trees were bare and truthful. This one was leafed and advertising. It had wrapped itself in the appearance of fruitfulness during a season when it had nothing to back that claim up. Jesus did not curse it for being barren. He cursed it for performing fruitfulness it did not have. And Mark, being Mark, wrapped this story around another one , the cleansing of the temple , as a deliberate literary sandwich. The fig tree is the temple. The temple is the fig tree. Both were covered in impressive leaves. Both had nothing underneath when someone came close enough to reach in. 📖 MEMORY VERSE "He said to them, 'Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations?
