Padmanabhan, the celebrated writer of popular fiction in Malayalam, the language spoken by more than 30-million people in state of Kerala, India. The nonagenarian writer, still actively pursuing his writing passion has a wide readership in India, and in a large diasporic community spread across Europe, Asia and America. The film deftly weaves in the facts of his personal and professional life, with facets from an intense world of fiction he has created in his acclaimed short stories. Conversations with the writer, and characters from his works coming alive on screen, in a backdrop of painting, animation and music capture the writer’s complex world of beauty and emotion. Loneliness and its sometimes-desirable counterpart for a writer -solitude; the everyday challenges and the deeper internalised conflicts of a writer’s life - all find expression in the film. The society the writer moves in unfolds through its themes of oppression and struggles against the social order. Though the bold, experimental treatment of a complex theme demands new forms of expression, the director has taken care to present a cohesive narrative in images of visual beauty, suffused with alluring music that highlights the content. The fact that the director, Susmesh Chandroth, is also a notable writer of short fiction stamps this narrative of a creator’s life with an authenticity evident in the selection of content and thematic progression of the film.
