On 8th of May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared to a weary nation that hostilities had officially ended, and people spilled onto the streets in a spontaneous show of celebration and relief. For this year’s important V.E. Day commemorations, the Dove of Peace has been chosen to represent the joy of a nation released from the tyranny of war. This global symbol of hope has been crafted by talented designer Jody Clark, whose portrait of His Majesty King Charles III appears on the reverse of these coins. The Dove of Peace featured on a commemorative British £2 coin for the 50th anniversary of V.E. Day thirty years ago (in 1995) but this is the first time that it has ever been seen on a sovereign coin.
