It's on y'all! The FULL interview with the legendary Charles McPherson!
Honestly, it was privilege and a gift for me just to be in Charles’s presence, to listen to his stories, and to learn from him. And I truly hope this interview becomes a gift not just for me, but for the entire jazz community and generations of musicians to come.
There’s SO much to learn here. So much that we don’t necessarily learn in school.
I can’t stress enough how important it is that we continue to learn directly from the masters and preserve the oral tradition of this music.
Because that’s how this music was passed down! Through the recordings, the bandstand, the mentorship, and the knowledge being passed from one generation to the next. That’s something no textbook can replace.
And Charles McPherson is a living connection to that tradition.
We get into Charlie Parker, Barry Harris, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Detroit jazz history, the rhythm of bebop, and so much more. These are stories and lessons that every jazz lover and music-history enthusiast should hear.
So please, sit back and enjoy this conversation. I hope you get as much out of it as I did!
And I hope you’re enjoying this new interview series on To Be or Not To Bop. We’ve got so many more incredible musicians, stories, and conversations coming your way.
NEXT UP: THE GREAT KENNY WASHINGTON!
Stay tuned, y’all!
